Norwid był młodszy od Chopina o jedenaście lat. Młody poeta i rysownik dopiero wchodził w środowiska literackie i artystyczne, gdy pianista i kompozytor był już znany w całej Europie. Obaj żywili podobną, zakodowaną w ich sercach głęboko, miłość do opuszczonej, zniewolonej ojczyzny. Sztuka ich obu wyrastała z polskiej tradycji, by sięgać w głąb tradycji europejskiej, a zarazem torować europejskiej sztuce nowe drogi.
Norwid was eleven years younger than Chopin. The young poet and fine artist was just entering literary and artistic Ēmigré circles when the pianist and composer was already well-known throughout Europe. They were quickly united by friendship. They had the same Warsaw roots, frequented the same salons there, only Chopin, was an idol there a decade earlier. Both Norwid and Chopin had a similar love for their abandoned and enslaved homeland, encoded deep in their hearts. The art of both of them grew out of a Polish heritage to reach deep into the European tradition, while at the same time paving new paths for European art.
